Higher Education System of Tunisia
The Ministry of Higher Education administers tertiary/higher education in Tunisia. Tertiary education in Tunisia is regulated by the higher education law, No.2008-19, of 25 February 2008.
Higher education in Tunisia is offered by universities, higher institutes and colleges, and higher institutes of technological studies. In Tunisia, there are 198 state higher education institutions, and 46 private higher education institutions.
Higher Education Institutions
In Tunisia, there are following types of higher education institutions: universities (aljamiat), higher Institutes (almaahid), faculties (al-kuliat) and ecoles" (al-madaress).
Universities in Tunisia are mostly multidisciplinary and offer programmes at all three levels of degrees-bachelor, master and doctoral.
Higher Education Qualifications
The higher education qualifications in Tunisia are- LMD (license-master-doctorate).
First Level Degree
Bachelor’s Degree
The first level degree provides basic knowledge and skills in a particular discipline.

Diplome d’Etudes Universitaires de Premier Cycle (DEUPC)
Diplome de Technicien Superieur and Diplome d’Etudes Superieures de Technologie
These qualifications are awarded in the technical field. After completion of the technical programmes, the higher technical diploma (Diplome de Technicien Superieu) is awarded.
Second Level Degree-Master’s Degree (Mastere)
The second level degree provides a specialisation programme.
Third Level Degree- Research Degrees
Mastere-Mastere specialise- Diplomes d’etudes Superieures specialisees (DESS)
- Duration: At least 1 year after bacehlor’s degree
Diplome d’Etudes Approfondies (DEA, or Diploma of Advanced Studies)
Students who hold a master’s degree are eligible for this degree programme. This degree requires preparation and defense of a thesis.
Doctorate Degree
This is the highest degree awarded in Tunisia. Students who hold a master’s degree or Diploma of Advanced studies (DEA) qualification are eligible for doctoral programmes. Students are required to prepare and defend an original research thesis.
- Duration: 3 years after the Master’s degree or DEA
- Credential: Diplome de Doctorat
Admission Requirements
Students who have successfully completed secondary education and hold a baccalaureate are eligible to apply for higher education in Tunisia.
